An honest guide to what home help actually costs, how Attendance Allowance works, when council funding applies, and how home help fits alongside regulated care financially.

Funding & Practical Admin

2 guides 12 minute read

Two practical things tend to sit unaddressed for longer than they should: working out how home help is actually going to be paid for, and getting the legal paperwork sorted before it's urgently needed.

Neither is complicated once you know where to start. These two guides cover each in plain language.

01 Paying for Home Help — Funding & Costs Explained What home help actually costs, how Attendance Allowance and council funding work, and how home help fits alongside regulated care. 02 LPA, Wills & Practical Admin A plain-language guide to Lasting Power of Attorney, wills and document organisation — why doing this early matters, and how to raise it.

A note on timing. LPA has to be arranged while the person granting it has the mental capacity to do so. It's genuinely worth raising before it feels urgent, not after.

Common questions

It varies by provider and hours needed, but transparent, flat hourly pricing (rather than a quote that changes once you've committed) is what to look for. See the funding guide for specific figures and what drives the cost.
Funding and costs covers what home help costs and how Attendance Allowance and council funding actually work. LPA, wills and practical admin covers the paperwork side — getting Lasting Power of Attorney and wills sorted before they're urgently needed.
Not necessarily before care starts, but earlier is always easier. LPA has to be arranged while the person has mental capacity to grant it — waiting until a crisis can mean it's no longer possible.
Attendance Allowance is not means-tested and isn't restricted to specific uses, so many families do put it towards home help. It's worth applying for regardless of whether you've decided on a provider yet.
